Why Your AC Never Shuts Off During a Miami Summer

First: Continuous Running Is Not Automatically a Fault
This is the part that surprises people. On a 92-degree August afternoon in Miami, a correctly sized air conditioner is supposed to run for long stretches — sometimes nearly continuously during the hottest hours.
Air conditioners are not sized for the worst possible day. They are sized for a design temperature, and on days above that, a properly sized system runs close to full time. That is by design, and it is also the most efficient way for it to operate.
Modern variable-speed systems take this further: they are built to run almost constantly at low capacity rather than cycling on and off. If you recently replaced a single-stage system with a variable-speed one and it now "never turns off," that is the system working as intended, not a defect. Long low-capacity run times are what produce steady temperatures and good dehumidification.
So When Is It a Problem?
The distinction is not whether it runs a long time. It is whether it is keeping up.
Ask: is the house actually reaching the temperature you set? If the thermostat says 74 and the house is 74, a long run time is fine. If the thermostat says 74 and the house sits at 79 all afternoon, the system is losing the fight, and that is worth diagnosing.
Second question: has this changed? A system that ran continuously last August and runs continuously this August is behaving consistently. A system that used to cycle and now never stops has changed, and something caused that change.
The Causes We See Most
A dirty filter or blocked airflow. Restricted airflow means less heat moved per minute, so the system runs longer to accomplish the same cooling. It is the cheapest cause and always worth eliminating first.
A dirty outdoor coil. If the condenser cannot release heat efficiently, the system runs longer and its capacity drops on exactly the hottest days, when the temperature difference it is fighting is largest.
Low refrigerant. A system low on charge loses capacity. It will run continuously and still fail to reach setpoint on hot days, and it may ice up. Since refrigerant is not consumed, low charge means a leak.
Leaking or undersized ductwork. If ducts run through a 130-degree attic and leak, a significant share of your cooling never reaches the rooms. The system runs constantly because it genuinely is cooling — the attic.
An undersized system. If the equipment was sized by rule of thumb rather than a load calculation, it may simply be too small for the house. See our guide on AC sizing in Miami.
A failing compressor. An aging compressor loses capacity gradually. The system runs longer and longer over a few seasons until it cannot keep up at all.
Thermostat set to Fan: On. Worth checking because it is free: with the fan set to On rather than Auto, the blower runs continuously even when cooling is not. People hear the constant air and assume the whole system is running.
The Envelope Matters Too
Sometimes nothing is wrong with the air conditioner at all. Attic insulation settles and thins over decades. Old single-pane windows on a west-facing wall admit an enormous afternoon heat load. Door and window seals degrade. A mature shade tree comes down in a storm and suddenly the roof takes full sun.
Any of these increases the load on an unchanged system, which then runs longer to do more work. Diagnosing this correctly matters, because replacing the equipment will not fix a building envelope problem.
How to Narrow It Down Yourself
- Set the fan to Auto and confirm the system is genuinely in a cooling cycle.
- Replace the filter and clear vegetation from around the outdoor unit.
- Measure the actual temperature at a supply vent and at a return vent. A healthy system typically shows a difference of roughly 16 to 22 degrees. Much less than that means it is not producing full capacity.
- Check whether the house reaches setpoint overnight, when the load is lowest. If it never does even at 3 a.m., capacity is genuinely short.
- Look for ice on the refrigerant lines. Ice means stop and call.
What It Is Costing You
A system that runs continuously without keeping up is expensive twice over: the electric bill reflects the run time, and the wear reflects it too. Compressors have a finite number of running hours, and a system fighting an unresolved problem spends them faster.
If your bill has climbed noticeably compared to the same month last year and the house is not more comfortable for it, that gap is the cost of the underlying problem.
Get a Straight Diagnosis
The supply-vent temperature check will tell you whether you have a capacity problem, but not why. Refrigerant, electrical testing and duct assessment need instruments and a license.
